Types of forced air furnaces 80% versus 90% versus 95%
80% furnaces vent into an existing chimney, and usually requires a chimney liner (at additional cost). 80% furnaces are noisier due to the fact that they draw combustion air from inside the house (air that you already paid to heat). 80% furnaces are very reliable and do cost much less on the install. If you are not planning on a long stay at your current residence 80% may be the way to go, but keep in mind at today's gas prices 90% and 95% furnaces have a very short payback period, sometimes as low as 2 years.
90% furnaces vent directly outside with PVC piping, which eliminates the need for a chimney. With this type of venting you are pulling all the air for combustion from the outside, burning it and venting it back outside, thus not wasting any heated air already in your home. They are quieter for this reason also. The heat exhanger warranty's are also longer due to stainless steel construction needed for the condensation created by the furnaces high efficiency.
95% furnaces are the same as the 90% models adding and additional 5% gas savings all the while increasing comfort and indoor air quality with 2 stage capabilites. These models also qualify for the $1500.00 tax credit.
All three furnace types will heat your home to your desired comfort level, and can operate all types of comfort add-on products like air cleaners and humidifiers.
Single Stage versus 2- Stage
Single Stage and 2- Stage furnaces are available in 80%, 90% and 95% efficiency.
A Single Stage (100,000 BTU's) 80% furnace comes on at 100,000 BTU's and 20% or 20,000 BTU's are wasted going up the chimey. If you had the same furnace in 2- Stage it would fire at 50,000 BTU's and try to satisfy the thermostat and waste only 20% (10,000 BTU's) up the chimey.
A 2-Stage furnace will run 75%-85% of the time on low fire and save high for those very cold days.
2-Stage furnaces have longer run times and regualte a much more even temperature (no more setting the thermostat to 72 degrees and finding 70-74 degrees swings common to single stage stage heating).
The last benefit for a 2- Stage furnace is noise reduction. A furnace low fire is of course much quieter than one at full power. Remember a 2- Stage furnace runs 75%-85% time on low.
